Libellulidae - Brachygonia oculata

Brachygonia oculata is a small size dragonfly. It is normally found at swamp forest. I find this small dragonfly rather cute. It is not too difficult to photography B. oculata because they frequently perch on twig and leaf.

Megapodagrionidae - Podolestes buwaldai

My latest encounter on Podolestes buwaldai makes me feel a sense of acheivement because I finally have photographed all the species of Megapodagrionidae of Peninsular Malaysia. There are four species of Megapodagrionidae in Peninsular Malaysia, namely Rhinagrion mima, R. macrocephalum, Podolestes orientalis and P. buwaldai. Between the two Podolestes species, P. buwaldai is more rare and local.

Sungai Bebar

Sg Bebar is located at the south eastern of Pahang state. It is a peat swamp with plentiful of Padanus plant covering the both side of the river. It is really hazardous to move around the river with over grown Padanus plant. Nevertheless, it is a nice habitat for Odonata.

On Sampling.........

I'm going to Sg Bebar (Pahang) soon for Odonata. This will be my first visit to Sg Bebar, and I'm really looking forward to going there. I have been told by my colleagues of how nice is the Sg Bebar aquatic habitat - peat swamp! I am expecting something interesting from Sg Bebar.

Libellulidae - Orthetrum triangulare

Orthetrum traingulare is a medium to large size dragonfly species. It is categorized as highland species (altitudinal distribution 500-1500 m) in Peninsular Malaysia. I spotted quite a good number of them in Cameron Highlands. O. triangulare is always confused with O. glaucum as both have blue marking. However, O. triangulare is distinguishable from O. glaucum by having distinctive triangular patch on the base of hingwing.

Chlorocyphidae - Heliocypha biforata

Heliocypha biforata is a beautiful damselfly species. It looks alike H. perforata, yet both the species could be distinguished easily. H. biforata has more intensive pink marking on its dorsal thorax and less obvious blue marking on its abdomen compared to H. perforata. H. biforata and H. perforata share similar habitat (fast flowing forest stream) and have similar behaviour (pearching on logs and rock along the stream).

Chlorocyphidae - Heliocypha perforata

Heliocypha perforata is a elegant damselfly species. The blue markings on its thorax and abdomen are distinctive. It is normally found at fast flowing forest streams. It likes to pearch on logs and rock under along the stream.

Larval Emergence - Gynacantha subinterrupta

I recorded a series of photos showing the process of larval emergence of Gynacantha subinterrupta...........


I caught this G. subinterrupta larva from a small shady standing water at the forest edge of Bangi Forest Reserve. This larva image was taken just six hours before the larval emergence. It is a male larva. The larva morphology of G. subinterrupta is not much different from that of G. basiguttata.




The emerging adult of G. subintterupta is on its way............

Exuvia - Epophthalmia vittigera

I collected this exuvia from a shady leafy muddy pond at the forest edge of Bangi Forest Reserve some time ago. I spotted it clinging on a thick stick (a fallen branch) in the middle of the pond. I was quick shocked by its size from far. Yes, it is an exuvia of Epoththalmia vittigera! Honestly, I haven't seen an adult of E. vittigera, but according to literature, its size is hw 52 mm, and is said to be the largest corduliid from Peninsular Malaysia. The larval mask of E. vittigera is armed with extremely long and robust teeth, and dorsal part of the larval body is covered by strong spines. I wish one day I could witness myself an adult E. vittigera.
