Odonata Checklist for Terengganu

Protosticta curiosa is a new record for Malaysia, and it is so far found in Terengganu.

Telosticta dayak is a recently described new species of platystid from Borneo.

Telosticta janeus Dow & Orr 2012 is a newly described platystid species from Borneo. It is endemic to Sabah.

Drepanosticta versicolor

Drepanosticta versicolor is not found in Peninsular Malaysia. It is from Borneo.

Drepanosticta sharpi

Drepanosticta quadrata, D. fontinalis and D. sharpi look alike to each other, and only close inspection on anal appendages could tell them apart. Below photo shows a male of D. sharpi.

Drepanosticta quadrata is truely a forest species, and it is widespread in Peninsular Malaysia. I have bumped into the male of D. quadrata on many occassions, but spotting a female of D. quadrata is truely not an easy task. Finally, I spotted females of D. quadrata, and now I know why it is so hard to spot female of D. quadrata....

Drepanosticta rufostigma

Borneo is rich in family Platystictidae, and most members of Platystictidae are endemic species. Drepanosticta rufostigma is a member of Platystictidae, and it is endemic to Borneo.

Drepanosticta actaeon

Drepanosticta actaeon is an endemic damselfly species to Borneo. It has so far been found in Sabah.

Drepanosticta fontinalis

Actually, Drepanosticta fontinalis (photo below) and D. quadrata are equally common platystid species in Peninsular Malaysia. From my own observation, it seems that D. quadrata is more confined to southern part of Peninsular Malaysia while D. fontinalis is to northern part of Peninsular Malaysia. Nevertheless, I strongly believe that both D. fontinalis and D. quadrata are the same species but different variants. The illustrations of anal appendages for D. fontinalis in Lieftinck (1937) and D. quadrata in Lieftinck (1965) do not seem to be different for me. The blue marking on the abdominal segment 8 is just not too reliable.

Family Platystictidae contains mainly forest species, and most of them are found to be endemic. Among the few species of Platystictidae recorded in the Peninsular Malaysia, Drepanosticta fontinalis is the most common one. Orr (2005) stated that D. quadrata is known only from Singapore Island. Actually, D. quadrata is also quite common in Peninsular Malaysia, particularly southern part of Peninsular Malaysia.
