Larva - Lathrecista asiatica

Last night I noted that this libellulid larva (below) was quite matured, and I took a few snaps on it. I went to check this larva this morning......... it emerged! It is a female of Lathrecista asiatica. You may view the male adult L. asiatica here.

Libellulidae - Pseudothemis jorina

I showed two flying Pseudothemis jorina some time ago (Click here to read the story). It is indeed very challenging to take photos on P. jorina because it is always on wing and it just loves to fly around pond continuously with high speed! Well, my luck was a bit good this time I guess because this male P. jorina (below photo) just perched in front of me (about 3-4 feet in front of me). I managed to snap a few shots before it was on its wing again!

Calopterygidae - Neurobasis longipes

Members from family Calopterygidae are always beautiful, particularly Neurobasis species. In Peninsular Malaysia, two Neurobasis species have been recorded, i.e. N. chinensis and N. longipes, and Neurobasis chinensis is more common than N. longipes. The obvious difference between these two species is that longipes has longer legs. So far, N. longipes has been recorded in northern part of Peninsular Malaysia. For Borneo, however, chinensis is absent. I was at Lanjak-Entimau last year, and I managed to snap some pictures of N. longipes.

Coenagrionidae - Agriocnemis nana

Agriocnemis nana is one of the smallest odonates in the world (the length of the hindwing is 9 mm). It is less common compared to another small damselfly Agriocnemis femina. I was so lucky to spot some male and female of A. nana hanging around at an open grassy pond in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Bangi campus.

Mating - Urothemis signata

It was really my day as a couple (in wheel) of Urothemis signata just perched in front of me, and that I was with my camera! I immediately snaped a few shots on this couple.

Coeliccia kimurai

I was thrilled to record the presence of Coeliccia kimurai somewhere in Perak. The type spciemens (two specimens) were from southern of Thai Peninsula (Yala Provine) collected on July 26, 1988 by Y. Kimura. Asahina described the species after Kimura in 1990. Since then C. kimurai has not been spotted until May 2007 when two male specimens were caught somewhere in Negeri Sembilan. Now, this is the third location (somewhere in Perak) where C. kimurai has been recorded. Three male speciemens were caught in the third location. Showing below is one of the speciemens being caught in the thrid location.

Newly Emerged Female Neurothemis fluctuans

I was down into the swampy pond of Bangi Forest Reserve with my camera. I spotted a newly emerged female Neurothemsi fluctuans. The adult female was still attached to its exuvia. You may click here to view the male N. fluctuans and the newly emerged male adult.

Emerging Ceriagrion chaoi

I managed to take a series of photos showing the larval emergence of Ceriagrion chaoi.

Larval Emergence - Neurothemis fluctuans

I caught some small size libellulid larvae a week ago and am breeding them in small aquarium. One of the larvae emerged yesterday. It appeared to be a male Neurothemis fluctuans. Neurothemis fluctuans is one of the most common dragonfly species in Peninsular Malaysia. The male has red colour wings and body while the female is in yellowish brown colour.
